Peter A. Kouten is an estate planning attorney counseling clients on the many ways to ensure security of his client’s assets and distribution. Peter handles litigation matters in trusts and estates. He practices in probate courts throughout the state. Peter is a certified mediator. As the practice is mostly referral based, Peter has had opportunity and experience in defending his client’s children/young adults in minor criminal matters.
Peter has built a large practice determining the estate planning needs of his clients, drafting and executing these plans. He presents adult guardianship and conservatorship cases to the probate court. He routinely works to have family members appointed in these cases. Additionally, Peter has represented family members whose adult loved ones have been identified as vulnerable adults by city, county, and state authorities. He has experience representing cases brought by municipal elder support.
Peter earned his Juris Doctor from the Charleston School of Law, holds an MBA from The Citadel, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Charleston. He clerked at the Charleston County Probate Court and has formed his practice on Probate matters, Wills, Trusts, and Estate Planning.
Professional Activities and Memberships
Jaci joined the Kouten Law Firm in March of 2014. She practices in all areas of probate administration, including estate and trust administration, adult guardianships, and estate planning. She graduated cum laude from Charleston School of Law and is licensed in the State of South Carolina. At Charleston School of Law, Jaci was Managing Editor of the Federal Courts Law Review, served as a Legal Research and Writing Teaching Fellow, and received CALI Awards in Legal Research, Analysis and Writing, and Property. During law school, she worked for the Charleston County Public Defender, as well as for a prominent Charleston family law attorney.
Prior to law school, Jaci worked for nearly a decade as a therapist for children with autism. She received a Bachelor’s in English from College of Charleston, and has published a number of poems and short stories in literary journals. She lives in West Ashley with her husband, son, and three dogs.
